Is DigitalOcean Down? How to Check DO Status Right Now
DigitalOcean hosts hundreds of thousands of developer projects, startups, and production apps. When a datacenter has an incident, Droplets can go unreachable without warning. Here's how to check DO's status, diagnose the cause, and protect yourself from the next outage.
โก Quick DigitalOcean Status Check
How to Check if DigitalOcean is Down
1. status.digitalocean.com (Official)
DigitalOcean's official status page shows real-time health per service and per datacenter region (NYC1/3, SFO2/3, AMS2/3, SGP1, LON1, FRA1, TOR1, BLR1, SYD1). Subscribe to email or Slack alerts directly from the page.
2. APIStatusCheck
APIStatusCheck monitors DigitalOcean with continuous health checks for a fast consolidated view.
3. DO Console + Cloud Firewall Check
Log in to cloud.digitalocean.com. If your Droplets show as "Active" but are unresponsive, the issue may be a Cloud Firewall rule rather than an infrastructure outage. Check Networking โ Firewalls.
4. doctl CLI Check
Run doctl compute droplet list to verify Droplet status and IP, or curl -s https://api.digitalocean.com/v2 -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN" to test API connectivity.
Automate DigitalOcean uptime monitoring
Stop manually checking DO status. Better Stack sends instant alerts via phone, SMS, or Slack the moment your Droplets or App Platform goes down.

Droplet Networking
Internal networking routes fail, Droplets become unreachable via IP
Managed Databases
Connection pools fail, read replicas lag or disconnect
App Platform
Build queue delays, deploy failures, container restart loops
Kubernetes (DOKS)
Node pools fail to scale, cluster API becomes unresponsive
Spaces (Object Storage)
CDN endpoints slow, upload/download timeouts
Load Balancers
Health checks fail, traffic stops routing to backend Droplets
What to Do When DigitalOcean is Down
Identify your datacenter region
Check status.digitalocean.com and find your specific datacenter (e.g., NYC1). Region-specific incidents don't affect other datacenters โ NYC1 can be down while SFO3 is fully operational.
Use the Console terminal
If SSH fails, use the DigitalOcean web console (cloud.digitalocean.com โ Droplet โ Console). This bypasses networking issues and lets you investigate from inside the Droplet.
Check disk space and memory
Many "outages" are actually full disks or OOM events. Run df -h and free -m from the console to rule out resource exhaustion before blaming DO infrastructure.
Fail over to a snapshot
If the Droplet is unrecoverable, restore from a recent snapshot in a different datacenter. This is why enabling weekly snapshots is recommended for all production Droplets.
Set up uptime monitoring
DigitalOcean's built-in monitoring sends basic alerts, but Better Stack provides 30-second multi-location checks with phone/SMS/Slack alerts for production-grade monitoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if DigitalOcean is down right now?
Check status.digitalocean.com for official status by service and region. APIStatusCheck provides a consolidated real-time view. Twitter search "DigitalOcean down" shows developer reports.
Why can't I SSH into my DigitalOcean Droplet?
Check status.digitalocean.com for your region. If no outage, use the DO Console terminal (bypasses networking). Common non-outage causes: full disk, memory exhaustion, firewall blocking port 22.
How often does DigitalOcean go down?
Region-specific incidents happen 1-3 times per month. Full platform outages are rare. Most incidents last 30 min to 2 hours and affect a single datacenter.
Does DigitalOcean have an SLA?
DigitalOcean provides a 99.99% monthly uptime SLA for Droplets and a 99.95% SLA for Managed Databases. Service credits apply if uptime falls below these thresholds in a given month.

๐ Can't Access DigitalOcean?
If DigitalOcean is working for others but not for you, it might be an ISP or regional issue. A VPN can help bypass network-level blocks and routing problems.
Troubleshoot with a VPN
Connect from a different region to test if the issue is local to your network. Also protects your connection on public Wi-Fi.
