⚡ Check PSN Status Now
Sony maintains a real-time PSN status page:
PSN Service Components
PSN has multiple independent services. The PlayStation Store can be down while multiplayer works fine — Sony reports each separately:
Is It PSN or Your Network?
Quick Diagnostic
- ✅ status.playstation.com shows red → PSN outage, wait for Sony to fix
- ✅ Other devices browse the internet fine → console or Sony server issue
- ✅ Can sign into PlayStation.com on browser but not console → console network settings
- ✅ Friends on same ISP also affected → ISP routing issue to Sony servers
- ✅ NAT Type 3 showing → router firewall blocking PSN ports
- ✅ Error starts with "WS-" or "NP-" → PSN server error
Check status.playstation.com
Always check the official PSN status page first. If Sony shows an active incident, there's nothing you can do on your end except wait. Check back every 30 minutes for updates.
Restart your console
Hold the PS button → Power → Restart (not power off). This clears temporary network states and resets the PSN connection cache on your console.
Restart your router
Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully connect before turning your console back on.
Run a network test
PS5: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. PS4: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. This shows exactly where connectivity is breaking — internet, PSN, or NAT type.
Change DNS settings
PS5/PS4: Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Custom → Manual DNS. Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare). This often resolves NAT and PSN connection issues on ISPs with poor routing to Sony servers.
Check NAT Type
NAT Type 1 (open) = best. NAT Type 2 = good. NAT Type 3 (strict) = limited multiplayer. If you're NAT Type 3, enable UPnP on your router or set a DMZ for your PlayStation's IP address.

🌐 Can't Access PlayStation Network?
If PlayStation Network is working for others but not for you, it might be an ISP or regional issue. A VPN can help bypass network-level blocks and routing problems.
Troubleshoot with a VPN
Connect from a different region to test if the issue is local to your network. Also protects your connection on public Wi-Fi.

If you have NAT Type 3 or persistent connection issues, your router may be blocking PSN traffic. These ports need to be open:
| Port | Protocol | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 80 | TCP | PlayStation Network |
| 443 | TCP | PlayStation Network (secure) |
| 1935 | TCP | PlayStation Network, streaming |
| 3478 | UDP | PlayStation Network, STUN |
| 3479 | UDP | PlayStation Network, STUN |
| 3480 | TCP | PlayStation Network |
Forward these ports to your PlayStation's static IP address in your router settings to improve NAT type and connectivity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does PSN go down on holidays and game launches?
PSN experiences the most traffic on Christmas Day (when millions of new consoles and gift games are activated simultaneously) and on major game launch days. Sony's infrastructure gets overwhelmed by the spike. Outages on these days are predictable — plan for them by downloading games in advance and setting realistic expectations for multiplayer access.
How long do PSN outages usually last?
Minor PSN outages (affecting some users or specific services) typically resolve within 1-4 hours. Major outages affecting all users have historically lasted 2-8 hours, with the most severe incident (PlayStation Network Outage 2011) lasting 23 days — though that was a security breach, not infrastructure. Modern PSN outages are much shorter.
Can I still play single-player games when PSN is down?
Yes — single-player games that don't require a PSN connection will still work. PS Plus (PlayStation Plus) subscribers may lose access to PS Plus games if PSN is fully down, since the console periodically checks your subscription status. Games you've purchased outright are unaffected.
Does PlayStation offer compensation for PSN outages?
Sony has occasionally offered PS Plus time extensions or store credit after prolonged outages, but this is at their discretion and not guaranteed. The PlayStation Network Service Level Agreement does not guarantee uptime or automatic compensation for downtime.
