Troubleshooting NordVPN Connection Issues
Switch to NordLynx (WireGuard) protocol first
NordLynx is NordVPN's fastest protocol and the most likely to connect successfully. Go to Settings → VPN Protocol → NordLynx. If that fails, try OpenVPN UDP, then OpenVPN TCP. TCP is slower but works on networks that block UDP.
Use Quick Connect instead of picking a specific server
Quick Connect automatically selects the fastest available server based on load and distance. If you manually selected a server that's experiencing issues, Quick Connect routes around it automatically.
Obfuscated servers bypass ISP and network-level VPN blocks
If your ISP, school, or workplace network actively blocks VPN traffic, standard NordVPN servers won't connect. Enable Obfuscated Servers in Settings — this wraps VPN traffic to look like normal HTTPS. Note: obfuscated servers are only available with OpenVPN protocol and are slower than NordLynx.
Kill Switch behavior during disconnections
NordVPN's Kill Switch blocks all internet traffic if the VPN drops. This protects your IP from exposure but means you lose connectivity completely during a server outage until you reconnect. If you need internet access during a NordVPN outage, temporarily disable Kill Switch in Settings.
Reinstall the NordVPN app for persistent failures
On Windows, use the official NordVPN uninstaller (downloaded from nordvpn.com) rather than the standard Add/Remove Programs — this removes all drivers and config files that can cause reinstall issues. On macOS, drag to Trash and empty it before downloading the fresh installer.
